Théo Ould : the accordion merges
Portrait
“Served by a masterly technique (an unbelievably supple left hand and an inexhaustible wealth of phrasing), Théo Ould’s interpretations show a personality expressing itself naturally in terms of the imagination, with all the enchanting freshness that word implies.”
Pierre Gervasoni – Le Monde
At the age of 24, Théo Ould becomes the first accordionist to be nominated as a Newly Discovered Talent at the Victoires de la Musique Classique awards. “His playing wonderfully merges virtuosity, refinement and fantasy, pulling on all the sound strings of the machine all delivered with a confounding naturalness. The accordionist succeeds in this tour de force of aligning baroque, electro and complex contemporary writings in the same concert without it turning into a catch-all”
Sébastien Porte – Télérama
In September 2025, Théo Ould releases his second album with Alpha Classics, Balada para un loco—a project featuring his own arrangements of Astor Piazzolla’s music for sextet. Following the release, he embarks on a solo tour of North America, with performances at the Celebrity Series of Boston, Festival Bach Montréal, Princeton University Concert Series, Princeton Sound Kitchen, Barrington White House, and Capital Region Classical. While in the US, he will collaborate with composition students at UC Berkeley, Princeton University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Houston as a resident for Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education under the French Embassy in the United States.
Other highlights of his 2025–26 season include joining the Brussels Philharmonic as a soloist for their New Year’s concert tour, solo performances with the Avignon-Provence National Orchestra and Orchestre de Picardie, recital appearances at Klaipėda Concert Hall and De Bijloke, a tour of Ireland with soprano Alison Langer supported by Music Network Ireland, and continued collaborations with the Philia Trio and his Piazzolla sextet throughout Europe. Théo recently performed highly successful solo recitals at Brucknerhaus Linz, Théâtre du Châtelet, and the Leeds International Concert Season.
Théo began his musical studies at the Marseille Conservatoire at age six. He recalls, “When I held the accordion for the first time, I was fascinated by both its sound and its design—an intriguing blend of a computer keyboard and a spaceship, a machine to explore in every sense of the word.”
As the accordion’s repertoire, technique, and construction continue to evolve, Théo is part of a new generation shaping its future. Following in the footsteps of his teachers at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP), he is deeply engaged in advancing the instrument’s place in classical music. As a soloist, he performs the works he loves—Bach, Haydn, and Mozart—without being confined by tradition. At the same time, he works with contemporary composers such as Régis Campo, Tomás Gubitsch, and Philippe Hersant to push the boundaries of the instrument’s repertoire.
Equally passionate about opera and the UK rock scene, Théo seeks to reinvent the concert experience—not to dilute classical music, but to make it speak more vividly to today’s audiences. In 2023, he signed with Alpha Classics and released his debut solo album, Laterna Magica, a bold exploration of classical and electronic sounds that exemplifies his genre-defying artistic vision.
With each project, Théo continues to redefine what the accordion can be—bridging tradition and innovation in a voice entirely his own.
